anl. a- im Tatian: postul nom.sg. 156, 4; postoli
nom.pl. 66, 1. Die mhd. Form apostel (einmal
apostole sw.m.) ist relativ selten, da meist zwelf-
bote dafür steht. Nhd. heißt es Apostel st.m.

Ahd. apostol(o) ist ein Lehnwort aus lat. apósto-
lus; die Nebenform mit Aphärese des anl. a- er-
klärt sich aus seiner Schwachtonigkeit, vgl. lat.
epístola > ahd. pistul (s.d.), ep/bíscopus > biscof
(s.d.), cucúrbita > churbiz (s.d.), vgl. Franz,
Lat.-rom. El. im Ahd. 59; dasselbe gilt von mndl.
apostel und postel, ae. apostol und postol (s. Po-
gatscher, Gr., lat. u. rom. Lehnw. im Ae. 143 ff.:
ähnlich lat. asp(h)alt(r)us > ae. spaldur), me.
apostle, auch -stol, -ul, -el, -il neben postle, postel,
ne. apostle und, da die anord. Form unmittelbar
auf die gekürzte ae. Variante zurückgeht, a-
nord. postuli, -ole (vgl. anord. Púl für Apulien,
Noreen, Aisl. Gr.⁴ § 154 und Anm.), auch -ola

Lat. apostolus Abgesandter, das z. T. in wie-
derentlehnter, gelehrter Form auch in sämtli-
chen rom. Sprachen weiterlebt, italien. apostolo,
prov. span. port. apostol, frz. apôtre etc., ist sei-
nerseits aus gr. ἀπόστολος entlehnt, einer Ab-
leit. von dem Verbum ἀποστέλλω, das sich aus
ἀπο- (hin)weg (von) und -στέλλω sende zu-
sammensetzt; für letzteres hat sich noch immer
keine formal sowohl wie bed.mäßig überzeu-
gende außergriech. Anknüpfung beibringen las-
sen, es sei denn, man begnügt sich mit arm. steł-
canem schaffe, aind. sthálam Erhebung, An-
höhe
