St.(?), nur in Gl. des 12. Jh.s: Blindschleiche,
caecula, caeculus, caecicula
(Anguis fragilis L.);
einmal (Gl. 3, 82, Anm. 4) Hornviper, cerastes
(Cerastes cornutus Forsk.). Mhd. blinde-,
blindslîche sw. m., nhd. Blindschleiche m.f.,
mdartl. schwäb., schweiz. blindschleich, -schlî-
ch(er).

Diese Eidechsenart heißt der blinde Schleicher
( blint, slîchan) wohl wegen ihrer kleinen Au-
gen; so auch as. blindslīko (? Holthausen, As.
Wb. 8 verschrieben -slēko; vgl. S. 68 slīko; Gal-
lée, Vorstud. z. e. andd. Wb. 31. 410 [Richtig-
stellung]; die erwähnten Hss. sind aber entwe-
der völlig oder z. T. hochdeutsch), mndd. blint-
slīker. Vgl. ne. blindworm, ndän. nschwed.
blindorm, wie auch lat. caecula usw. (zu caecus
blind). Nach Schrader, Reallex. d. idg. Alt.² I,
231, beruht die Bezeichnung viell. auf volks-
etym. Umdeutung von lat. ablinda ein Reptil
(einem Alpenwort dunklen Ursprungs).
