eckol m. (n.?) a-St., nur in obd. Gl. vom
10./11. Jh. an: Stahl, chalybs, aciarium, acira,
acuale
Var.: -ch-, -cch-, im 12. und 13. Jh.
ekol, -il, -el. Mhd. bair. selten eckel, nhd.
dial. bair., tirol. eckel Stahl, steir. eckeln
stählen. Das Wort ist aus lat. aciāle Stahl,
einer in Oberitalien aufgekommenen Neben-
form des in Gl. des 7./8. Jh.s belegten Wortes
vulg.lat. aciārium Stahl (> frz. acier Stahl)
entlehnt (aciārium ist eine Ableitung von lat.
aciēs Schneide). Infolge des Wandels von vulg.
lat. Kons. + io > Kons. + o wurde vulg.lat.
k vor geminiert; vgl. inschr. lat. soccio- (Leu-
mann, Lat. Laut- u. Formenlehre 130). Da obd.
-(c)ch- für dieses geminierte k steht, ist anzu-
nehmen, daß aciāle vor Eintreten der hd. Laut-
verschiebung entlehnt wurde.

Eine Übergangsform zwischen aciāle und aciāri-
um stellt das Glossenwort lat. aciare dar. Im
Galloroman. lebt aciāle nur in einigen dem Ita-
lien. benachbarten Dialekten (z. B. mailänd.
azal, venez. asal) fort. Italien ist aber nicht nur
das Ausgangsgebiet für das ahd. Wort, sondern
auch z. B. für ngr. ἀτζάλι, magy. acél. Ferner er-
scheinen im Slav. Lehnwörter wie sloven.,
tschech. ocel Stahl (Bezlaj, Etim. slovar slov. je-
zika II, 239).

vue de dialectologie Romane 2 (1910), 181. Miklo-
sich, Et. Wb. d. slav. Spr. 219.

Ob lat. acieris (-ē-) securis aerea qua in sacrificiis ute-
bantur sacerdotes
bei Festus etwas Altes darstellt, ist
unklar. Denn Festus glossiert nach Ausweis einer Gl.
eine Plautusstelle, weshalb es sich um einen Gen. aciē-
ris zu aciēs handeln könnte (Walde-Hofmann, Lat. et.
Wb. I, 8).
