betenbrôt n. a-St., nur akk. sg. petinbrot Not-
ker, Ps. gl.: die frohe Botschaft, das Evange-
lium, euuangelium
(mhd. betenbrôt, nhd.
mdartl. betenbrot). Das Wort ist wohl nur eine
Variante von mhd. botenbrôt (Lexer I, 332;
boto, brôt), das ursprl. Botenlohn, Lohn für
eine Botschaft
, dann aber auch die Botschaft
selbst
bedeutete. Mdartl. stehen bot(t)enbrot,
böt(t)enbrot und bet(t)enbrot nebeneinander in
beiden Bed. (vgl. bes. Schmeller, Bayer. Wb.² I,
308, wo u. a. böttenbrot als Glosse zu εὐαγγέλια
zitiert wird; s. auch Fischer, Schwäb. Wb. I,
950; Schweiz. Id. V, 975 ff.).

J. Grimm, Dt. Wb. II, 274 f., hat wohl recht,
wenn er behauptet, daß botenbrôt durch Anleh-
nung an bitten (part.-prät. gibetan) als erbete-
nes Brot
mißverstanden werden konnte; dazu
kommt die Tatsache, daß im Bair. und Alem. o
manchmal zu ö wurde, selbst wenn kein Grund
für i/j-Umlaut vorhanden war (vgl. Weinhold,
Bair. Gr. § 25; ders., Alem. Gr. § 27), während ö
manchmal als e erscheint (Bair. Gr. § 13; Alem.
Gr. § 16). Eine Form *bötenbrot ließe sich also
entweder als betenbrot oder botenbrot fassen, je
nachdem man das erste Element mit (gi)betan
oder boto assoziierte.

Ahd. Wb. I, 926 f.; Starck-Wells 48.
